Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), also known as Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) is a mechanism describing energy transfer between two light-sensitive molecules (or chromophores): a donor fluorophore and an acceptor chromophore. Since FRET is extremely sensitive to small changes in distance between the donor and the acceptor, the measurements of FRET efficiency can be used determine the distance between the two chromophores within several nanometer accuracy, compared to 200 nanometers (or 0.2 micrometer) defined by the Rayleigh criterion for the optical spatial resolution limit.
