Calcium Imaging is used to optically probe intracellular calcium in cell or tissues of living animals, by detecting fluorescence emission from calcium indicators (e.g. chemical indicators, and genetically encoded calcium indicators or GECI) stimulated by light. Calcium ions generate various intracellular signals that determine a wide range of functions in almost every cell type in biological organisms, including the control of heart muscle cell contraction as well as the regulation of vital aspects of the entire life cycle of cells, and therefore Calcium Imaging is an important techniques in bioscience research.
