Live Cell Imaging

Live Cell Imaging is an important technique in bioscience, as it allows scientists to better understand the structure, function and behavior of living organisms at the cellular and subcellular levels. Besides a microscope (e.g. confocal or fluorescence), a well-designed illumination system is indispensible in order to obtain a good-quality live cell image. In a fluorescence microscope, for example, it is essential to eliminate all unwanted out-of-band light which may add to the background (leading to poor contrast). A traditional light source (such as a mercury lamp) usually has a very broad spectrum and, in order to eliminate the out-of-band spectral component, expensive high-extinction-ratio optical band-pass filters are usually required. In addition, traditional light sources have short life time (e.g. a few 100 hours), are slow to warm up, and have slow time response.

In comparison, an LED has a much narrower spectrum and hence has very little out-of-band spectral component. Based on their desired fluorescent stains, customers can choose from Mightex's extensive range of LEDs to match the excitation wavelengths requirement. In a multi-LED system, only the LED at the excitation wavelength is turned on (and all the other LEDs can remain off), leading to extremely 'clean' background and hence making it possible for customers to obtain high quality fluorescence images.
